I am interested in the interaction between sociohistorical context --especially, repression during the Franco-dictatorship (1939-75)-- and cultural expressions.</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <BR><FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0>As a result of the ambiguous character of Spain's transition to democracy, many of the effects --and responsabilities-- of cultural repression have remained concealed. This has led to mythifications and the appearance of «false heroes», but most of all, the cultural damage that Francoism caused is often underestimated or sometimes even ridiculed. The effectivity and penetration of the Francoist control instruments was such, that by neglecting or ignoring them we would fail to understand the rise of opposition movements and, therefore, important aspects of today's culture.</FONT></FONT></FONT> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0>I have chosen an <B>interdisciplinary approach</B>, in order to understand the ideological foundations of censorship and other aspects of cultural repression, on the one hand, and its effects on different forms of cultural expression --literature, political thought, fine arts, theater, film--, on the other. My first research projects fell under Sociology of Literature, although parts of my work are as well related to Historiography and the History of Ideas.</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0>Collections of journals and newspapers are an essential <B>source </B>for my research; I also have made extensive use of archives, such as the one pertaining to the Ministerio de Cultura (Alcalá de Henares).</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0>Research <B>topics </B>:</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <UL type=disc> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0><A HREF="http://geocities.datacellar.net/Athens/Parthenon/4087/Article/citas.htm#CENS">Censorship</A>: how did it work? Which criteria did they apply? How far-reaching were its effects? Could censorship interventions be avoided?</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0>Press history: especially, the journals <I>Ecclesia </I>, <I>Indice </I>and <I>Razón y Fe </I>.</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0><A HREF="http://geocities.datacellar.net/Athens/Parthenon/4087/Article/citas.htm#CELA">Camilo José Cela</A>: should the 1989 Nobel Prize winner be considered as a clever adversary of the Francoist cultural system, or is he an opportunist and a charlatan?</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0>The <A HREF="http://geocities.datacellar.net/Athens/Parthenon/4087/citas.htm#IGL">Catholic Church</A> during the first years of Francoism: did it really represent a more «liberal» wing of the dictatorship, as some have suggested? In particular, what was the Church's position in matters of censorship and cultural repression?</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <LI> <FONT FACE="helvetica"><FONT COLOR="#000000"><FONT SIZE=+0><A HREF="http://geocities.datacellar.net/Athens/Parthenon/4087/Article/citas.htm#FAL">«Left-wing» falangism</A>: Did such a thing exist? What is the explanation for such a paradoxical movement?</FONT></FONT></FONT></LI> <LI><font face="helvetica" color="#000000"> <A NAME="TRANS">The ambiguous character of Spain's transition to democracy</A> is closely related to the evolution of this cultural repression and the persistence of the "factical powers" behind it. I have seen my interpretation of what has happened over the past few years confirmed by the recent declarations of Luis María Anson.
