As much a
proponent as I've been of the internet, and all things free, I am disgusted
at the plagiarism and misinformation I find online these
days.
Between 1996 and 1997,
I worked hard compiling important links and offering
articles on my mailing lists, to guide and support Hellenes of
the Diaspora conduct research of their own family's lineages. My site,
the non-profit Hellenes-Diaspora Greek Genealogy Web Site, was the first most
indepth site of its kind , with more than 100 pages of articles, links and
advise, translations of form letters for Greek officials, addresses, and
a searchable 12,000 Greek surname database. Actually, there was no other
Greek genealogy site online at the time and the remnants of one or two most
recent ones which had been taken off, they had
been worthless. But inspite of all the kudos and awards
Hellenes-Diaspora received, due to the constant theft of my work -- my
creation -- and it hurt me to do so, I took my web site down around
2003.
I still get emails on a
daily basis from many family historians. Some ask advise, some retain me
for service .My best work was reuniting the 575 adoptees with their
birth families. For countless others, my mailing lists brought them
into contact with long-lost family throughout the world. I'm very proud of my
work.
But today, literally,
everywhere I look online, I read garbage posted as supposed expert
advise on how and what to do to retrieve lineage information on Greeks. I
see this on the popular genealogy sites and forums.
So, my advise to those
in search of this service, if you need a researcher, choose him or her wisely - look for the best qualified
to handle your search and/or reunion. My Frequently Asked Questions will
hopefully answer more of your questions.
