I was standing on a lady's balcony one Monday morning when a
beautiful, big garden spider walked between my feet and the lady's
(who we shall call Mrs B). Mrs B let out a scream and said 'Quick,
kill that spider'. She lifted her feet up as she spoke the words
ready to squash the spider as quick as a flash. My mind was racing
in overdrive. How was I to save this beautiful creature without
becoming tried for assault? 'It's bad luck to kill spiders', I
said in desperation, hoping that the Goddess of Superstition would
reveal her presence. It worked! Mrs B paused long enough for the
spider to move further away to safety. In the meantime Mrs B's
sister, Mrs W had gone to get the insect spray from inside.
'Where is it?', I could hear her yelling as she approached the
balcony. 'What now?', I said to myself. How was I going to save
the spider from the over reactive Mrs W? The spider was still on
the balcony but not moving fast enough to escape. There was a hand
towel drying on the edge of the balcony, quickly I picked it up,
picked up the spider and threw it into the bushes. Another successful
