The Role of Environmentalism in Modern Paganism
|
|
The role that is played by environmentalism is different for each
person, and each tradition. Some Pagans adopt a role of protector and
guardian to our environment, and, their type of worship is likely to
include such activities as being involved in campaigns such as "Clean
up Australia", saving the forests, education, and lobbying the
government for legislation to help protect our earth. Being an eco-pagan,
or green-Pagan. involves a conscious decision to act on behalf of the
earth, to ensure its health.v survival. Having said that, I'm sure that
most, if not all Pagans have a respect and love for our earth, so what
are some of the more physical actions that we can take to incorporate
sonle of the eco-Pagan into our own tradition and practices? I have
mentioned some ideas in tile opening of this article, but here are
a few other ideas to get you thinking:
- Reduce, reuse and recycle all that you can.
- Buy only what you need, and in the least offensive (from a waste
point of view) packaging.
- Make a decision to reduce tile amount of rubbish you send to land fill.
- If you smoke, pick up you butts, so they don't end up in the ocean,
or the fish we catch.
- Join an organisation like Greenpeace who have the time and the funds
to fight the larger issues confronting nature.
- Educate yourself about environmental issues, then in turn educate
others.
- Conserve water.
- Adopt a local park or other area, keep an eye out for acts of
environmental vandalism, and report them to the proper authorities.
- Encourage tile growth of native plants in your garden, and in local
council areas.
- In your rituals, remember the Earth, and work some Magick for her.
As you can see a small action on behalf of our earth will be of
benefit to everyone. See what you can come up with to set out to
achieve, and let me know of your experiences, successes and other
ideas.
