Since you're visiting here, chances are good you belong to an association such as a club, union, brotherhood, league, or some other group or society. Maybe you're an officer or a member of a board or committee, or maybe you're just a plain old member.
Organizations around the world - but
particularly in the U.S. - have adopted Robert's Rules of
Order Newly Revised (RONR) as their parliamentary authority.
They've discovered that meetings are much more productive when
everyone "plays by the same rules," and when those
rules are designed with the rights of the membership in mind. As RONR
says,
"The application of parliamentary law is the best method yet devised to enable assemblies of any size, with due regard for every member's opinion, to arrive at the general will on the maximum number of questions of varying complexity in a minimum time and under all kinds of internal climate ranging from total harmony to hardened or impassioned division of opinion."
