Memphis Central High School (called "The High School") is the oldest college preparatory
optional school in the Memphis City Schools. It is an urban school located in Central Gardens
a National Historic area of Memphis. The Academic environment at Central is diverse, vibrant,
and challenging, forming the perfect setting for a college bound student. As an optional, college
preparatory school, the academic focus is honors and advanced placement courses in English,
mathematics, science, computer science, music, foreign languages, art, and social sciences.
Additional course offerings include business and vocational subjects, and theater. Central's
course offerings are some of the most extensive and diverse in the city. As part of its
diversity, Central offers a school within a school program designed to maximize educational
opportunities for students who do not choose the college preparatory program.
Central Course Offerings
In addition to its academic programs, Central High School offers a comprehensive extracurricular
program to accommodate various talents and interests. The numerous academic and extracurricular
awards, received annusally, reflect both the academic achievements of the students and the quality
of the entire Central High School academic program.
Central Extracurricular Activities
The student population of Central is multiethnic. Students represent a cross section of the entire Memphis community. This cross section of ideas, talents and cultures provides a unique opportunity for educationally challenging and enriching experiences.
