One of the coolest things about Dawn of the Dead is the soundtrack. It seems to be the consensus on the net and over the web that one of the neatest aspects of the film is the cool, finger poppin' Italo zombie rock of Goblin. This Italian band has done dozens of scores for director Dario Argento, but by far my favorite is the Dawn of the Dead album.
The first track on the album, "L'abla dei Morti Viventi," or "Dawn of the Dead," is one of the best tunes. It's slow, thumping back beat is a grim reminder that no matter how slow the dead are moving, they are going to get you.
The next track, "Zombi," or "Zombie," was used in both the director's cut and the first issued film. Most of this song was used for action parts during the mall scenes. The moog synth does a good job of creating a "zombie chorus" that is used in the background of the song. This is a good tension builder.
Track number seven is probably my favorite from the soundtrack. "La Caccia" is an upbeat happily little tune that has a great mandolin track, and it's even better when the violins kick in. This music was used when Roger and Peter are blocking the mall entrances. You can just feel the fun Roger is having when this scene is being played out.
