The story is to help high school and undergraduate students in China to choose a right career path, since I desperately need one at that time.
I got into Ocean University of Qingdao,3185, just for that beautiful picture---Blue sky, blue sea, with a ship "DongFangHong". After graduation, I worked at North China Pharmaceutical Company to be in the same city with my girlfriend. Smell of fermentation mixed with terrible smell of organic solvent for extraction. Even nine years later, when I visited Budwiser production facility in St. Louis, that fermentation smell reminded me of many old time friends. Full of energy, I just didn't know what to do. Searching through the dark, I started to apply for graduate school in U.S. and got into University of Maryland at Baltimore for a Ph.D in biomedicinal chemistry program. Why I chose to be there? This is the only school that I paid the application fee. During that four years time, I witnessed how computer industry transformed our everyday life, how combinatorial chemistry reshaped drug design format, and how genetic engineering was no longer an episode in Jarasic Park. But I always feel that I am a step away in catching that moment. After two years of postdoctoral research at University of California, Berkeley working on the Human Genome Project, I started working in Molecular and genetic diagnostic industry. Currently, I work for DuPont Pharmaceucticals in High through-put screening for drug discovery.
Successful stories from friends's friends make me wonder what is missing here. Many of you just like me who can learn things fast and do things well. But we need professional advice to get that share in a bull market. A right career means more than a decent salary. It's a precondition for a quality life. Thought it is never too late to make a change, we want to do it right at the first place.
