In Ancient Athens, to be educated was to play a musical instrument, participate in a competitive sport,

learn and participate in a scientific discipline, read and study the religion and wisdom of the past and

of the day, nurture and develop an artistic talent,  and advance the technology of the civilization.

and yet are entirely modern.
