Naomi Edward's Collection of Old Photographs of India

As this page is being built up, it is still not yet organized as to how the photographs will be grouped. The pictures are basically in South India, and Bangalore as one of the identifiable places. Please send me a mail if you are able to identify any of the buildings, scenery that you recognise. Apparently as Naomi says " These are a few of the photos I mentioned - trust someone may know what or where they are or were located. I think they were taken in the early 1920's/30's. The photos with people in them are mostly of my grandmother, Mrs Adnah Shilling and my mother Violet Shilling (later changed to Violet Joyce once she married). My mother trained as a teacher at Good Shepher Convent (Bangalore) and then taught at Bishop Cotton school for girls where she took senior classes in physiology & hygiene and French. My grandmother was matron at Baldwin Boys School in the 30's and early 40's. My hands are tied a bit, because most of the photos do not have dates or names on them." As and when Naomi sends me the pics, I shall add them to the page. Because of the large number of photographs expected I am keeping the links in the below format and not using thumbnails. You would have to click on the links given below, and once the photograph comes up, you will have to use your 'Back' button to return to the page. The best way to view the photographs is to click on the link with the mouse right button and open it in a 'New Window'. Because the photographs are directly brought up, there is no 'Return' button available.

PLACE UNKNOWN

  • This particular building looks like a Castle, Fort or Palace, and may also be a bungalow that was built on the road to Hosur on the outskirts of Bangalore. This building was never occupied as the lady for whom it was built never came to India and the owner never had the heart to live in it. On second thoughts, looking at the landscape, there seems to be a sort of high and low ground and that is not the terrian that surrounded the Bangalore bungalow. Hence, it must be at some hill station somewhere in the South of India. The photos of the building are Through the Trees , one Side View and the Other Side View . Then there is a Long view , and a group of people, probably visitors on a Sunday Picnic at this building. Walking through the town with the building in the background. Note the height of the walls that gives rise to the building to be a Fort?! Could the area be Coonoor?
