About This Calendar:
Greetings everyone! I've been
hard at work getting this calendar in order. First, let me say, it's not
finnished. Here is the current season. The Ancient Egyptians
had three seasons, consisting of four months having 30 days each.
There are five added days at the end of the year, each one a birthday of
one of the children of Nut: Isis, Osiris, Nephthys, Set and Horus the Elder.
Making an Ancient Egyptian calendar coorespond to our Gregorian Calendar is not an easy task. For one thing, the Ancient Egyptians used three different calendar systems. A lunar calendar, a solar calendar and a Sothic calendar. I've concentrated on the solar one since it most resembles the one we use. The Ancient Egyptians didn't use days of the week or weekends. Most months have enough holidays that they may as well had weekends.
There is also the problem of when does the year start? Historically, it is supposed to start when the star Sirius rises over the Egyptian horizon, signalling the beginning of the annual flooding. This once occurred at the summer solstice. Well the Nile doesn't flood anymore because of the Dam, and Sirius now rises on August 1st.
Also I'm beginning to link festivals to a brief description of what they are about. So, if you see the underline indicating a link, follow it.
I hope you find this useful, and keep checking back for it to lengthen and expand. I welcome any and all input you'd like to add.
