Ruben Salaz author of New Mexico: a Brief Multi-history,  needs our help.
His book, that was scheduled to be published by the Hispanic Culture Center, is
being threatened. For those of us who are always searching for good books, on the
subject of New Mexico, it is very important that it be published.

Update: The publication has been stopped.
Updates will be posted.

The Issue of Don Juan de Onate
New Mexico's first Governor

Updated May 2, 1999

April 6, 1999

The Alburquerque city council meeting was a victory for NM Hispanic history.  The City Council overrode Mayor Baca's veto 7 to one, with Sam Bregman being the only negative vote. Alan Armijo introduced an amendment to the bill and it was voted in 7 to one, with Bregman being the only negative vote once again.  The design will be defined by the artist's rendition of the memorial. We do know one thing, Onate will definitely be included in the Memorial.
How prominent he will be remains to be seen.

I saw the Artist Rendition to the memorial this weekend and it's beautiful. Onate is right in front where he should be.

Well it looks like Arturo Sandoval is at it again. He is in the process of gathering  support for a protest of the Onate memorial. Be prepared for another battle, in about 3weeks. This will be when the City Council make the artist rendition public. It would be a good idea to contact the City Council and express your concerns over Mr. Sandoval's company, Voces, being given contracts to arrange festivities for New Mexican Hispanic celebrations. This includes Founder's Day.

July 3, 1999
We need to be ready to act. In August the City Council will make the redition public and as you know we are expecting a battle. The meeting should be held the first or second Mon. of August. Start gathering your friends and family. If each of us takes 10 people in with us we will be able to show our strength.
