Friday Morning July 11, 2003 Corrie started painful contractions, but they were very irregular. At 8 PM, the contractions intensified and started coming every 3 to 5 minutes. We left for the hospital and she was admitted at 11 PM. After being checked she was 5 centimeters, 90% thinned and the baby was at 0 station. After having gone to the hospital three other times with Preterm Labor and one false alarm, this was final the real thing. Our birthing Plan said we were going to have an all natural baby (That means no drugs to help with pain.)

As the night/morning went on, Corrie was progressing at about 1 centimeter every 2 hours. By 6 AM, Corrie was having some severe pain and had reached “almost” 9 centimeters. Around 9 AM Corrie’s water broke, and then the real pain started. From this point on, she had to really focus to be able to stand the pain. (Still no drugs for Corrie, although I was asking for some for myself.)

Corrie in Labor
Somewhere between 9 and 9:30, Corrie started pushing. Our wonderful nurse Vickie could see the head for the first time at about 10:30 and at that time we realized that the baby was in the OP position, which means it was face up instead of the preferred down. Vickie reassured us that a vaginal birth was still possible and this explained why Corrie was having so much back labor.

At 12 PM, the doctor pulled me aside and asked us to reconsider our options. Corrie and been pushing for almost 3 hours and she was absolutely exhausted and the baby was not progressing at all. The doctor told me that in 1 more hour, if Corrie had not progressed, she was going to give her a C-Section. She suggested that we get an epidural now, because she would have to have one in one hour no matter what. So we decided that was best as well and Corrie got the epidural at 1 PM

At 1:45 the decision was made to have a C-Section. We had been praying that we could have a vaginal birth, but we were also praying that God would help us make the right decision. He did!

Baby Lily after Birth
At 2:25 PM on July 12th, 2003 our baby was delivered by C-Section. The baby was unable to come through the birth canal upside down. And, as the baby was pulled out, we discovered for the first time that the cord was wrapped around the neck, under the right shoulder and around the chest. It was a tangled mess, and a miracle that she didn’t make it into the birth canal. That would have been major problems to have her live through the birth. God is Great.
