Fuzzy_bread: "A Flash in the Pan"

Ecclesiastes 4:10-15
Psalm 49

"Am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ(Galatians 1:10)."

A `flash in the pan,' in case you don't know, is someone or something who is only famous or popular momentarily. Even though I can't find an appropiate verse, I know that man's favor is only temporary, and God's favor lasts a lifetime. Here's an example of this: When I work in the dairy cooler at the supermarket, someone always leaves messages next to the cooler door. They tell me what to do. "Fill eggs, Belfonte and sale items," they'll say. Well, one day, I did everything on the list, and checked off each item. The next day, the paper on the door said, "Thanks." And then there weren't any angry messages. But later, when I was tired and couldn't perform as well, the person writing the notes(I have no idea who) seemed angry and frustrated at me. "FACE ENTIRE DAIRY, NOT JUST HALF OF IT. DO NOT STACK 30 DOZEN EGGS ON THE SIDE. THEY WILL DEFINATELY BREAK." I can always tell when they're angry. They forget how to spell.
At any rate, it just shows you how transitory the favor of human beings can be. People are so hard to please. Look at Gary Coleman. He was popular television once. Now he's working as a mall security guard. And if anyone's seen the Jackson Pollock movie, you can see how he gets famous for maybe a year or so, then Greenburg tells him that he's had it. Artists only get famous for so long. And anyone who has gone through, or is going through highschool can tell you, you can only be cool for so long. Sometime in the future, your clothing or style will no longer be considered `hip.' This is why it is better to please God. Psalm 30:5 says, "For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime..." (See, it's not exactly the verse I hoped I could find.) I think there should be a verse that says `man's favor is for but a moment.' But anyways, you get the point. When compared to the popularity of New Kids On The Block, there's no contest. God's favor lasts a million times longer. So, seek to gain God's favor. You can depend on it.

Dear Father in heaven, your favor is the only reliable favor in this world. Only you have the patience and caring enough to consider us, your creations, even though we are lowly, sinful human beings who do not always live up to worldly expectations. Lord, please work in our hearts so that we will earnestly seek your favor, and not the praise and popularity of this world. Help us to put our priorities in the right place, and remind us to seek the things of your kingdom, things that do not fail to satisfy our needs. Amen.
