Matthew 4:1-11
Psalm 10:3-11

"For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? (Matthew 16:26)."

A lot of famous people get wealthy because of spiritual corruption in their hearts. For those of you who may be fans of any of these people, I am referring to their lifestyle, not so much their art, unless their art condemns the living Christ. Marilyn Manson gained popularity by being contraversial and making audacious statements about Christianity and Christ. So did Ozzie Osbourne. These people make millions of dollars from making songs that glorify Satan. At one Marilyn Manson concert, the musician tore up a bible and openly mocked and insulted Christians. It may have been an act, but it offended me. You may argue that it's his point to offend, but I don't think it's a valid point. Marilyn Manson takes his stage act too far. He cuts himself open on stage with a knife, and he doesn't stop being Manson after the show is over. Call me what you want, but I think that means he's got a lot of hurt and pain in his heart. He doesn't seem very close to his emotions. That's not psychologically healthy. I feel that he has sacrificed these things for money.
George Lucas, who will have someday made six of the most popular science fiction movies of all time, sacrificed everything in his life for the sake of producing those movies. He faced poverty, theft and adverse weather conditions, and his obsession with making the films cost him his marriage.
Everywhere I famous people gaining lots of money. At one time I admired them, but as I delve deeper into their life stories, they are not good role models. In Psalm 10, we see that those who curse God's name are greedy. And truly, they get their money. But this is because they have spiritually(though maybe not physically) bowed down before Satan. Priding themselves in their `free speech,' their hearts and souls are empty. If this is what it means to be `a rock and roll rebel,' I do not think it is something to be admired. Let's not forget the posthumous fame that Curt Cobain was not able to enjoy.
Likewise, it is not good to create idols like George Lucas did. George Lucas studied mythology extensively, only seeing the story of Christ as a myth. So like in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, he had itching ears and accumulated for himself teachers to suit his own interests. It's sad and strange, but Star Wars is his true religion.
In a way, these examples all show how greed can hurt people's lives and hearts. It shows you how people can gain the whole world and yet forfeit their life. Maybe they do not forfeit their physical life, but they do forfeit their spiritual lives, their emotional health and their relationships. So read about the lifestyles of the people you admire. Make sure that it is acceptable in God's sight. Do not be enticed by their sudden gains of wealth. Some may be receiving gifts from Satan, and the gifts are empty.

Dear Father in heaven, it is easy to admire celebrities with glamourous lifestyles. They seem to have so much. They seem to have many friends and many nice expensive things. But Lord, please do not let those people become our role models unless their lives are truly acceptable in your sight. And above all, let us keep Christ as our ultimate role model. Jesus is the only person on earth who had no sin, so let us remember this and follow his example before all others. I pray this in His holy name. Amen.
