Standards will help you for the future, but what do you do if you've blown it in the past? That's a good question--and here is good news. You don't have to live with the mistakes of the past. You can move on. Here's how.
Confess all sin to God. The bible says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9). Get everything out in the open before the Lord. Agree with Him that what you did was wrong.
Receive his forgiveness. The apostle Paul tells us "There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1). If you confess your sins, God forgives you. You are pronounced "not guilty" before him. Receive God's forgiveness now.
Make your relationships right with others. Jesus said, "If therefore you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there at the altar, and go your way, first to be reconciled with your brother, and then come and present your offering. (Matthew 5:23,24). If what you have done has offended someone else, ask that person to forgive you. When you get things right, then you can move on.
Start over. The apostle Paul talked specifically about not letting past mistakes keep you down. "But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Phillipians 3:13,14.) Get up and get going.
