Above it all, Buddha smiles, blessing the university with his eternal and mystic smile. Though he is not the focus of Nalanda, yet always in the background, his serene presence can be felt. One just has to look deeper.
Nalanda was one of the high points of Buddhism in India, bridging the cultures across countries. Buddhist students from Ceylon and China, Thailand and Indo-China came here to live and learn.
Today, an international centre for Buddhist studies has been established here : a pale imitation of the great centre of learning that Nalanda once was.
