• Watership Down by Richard Adams

    A clan of rabbits seeks a new home after their warren is destroyed.  Along the way they encounter several other warrens, each ruled differently.  Not only and exciting story, but an interesting commentary on totalittarian governments.
 
• The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K.Chesterton

    Is there a conspiracy of anarchists in turn of the century London?  One man sets out ot find out, and discovers...well read it yourself.
 
• The Jeeves Stories by P.G. Wodehouse

    What can I say about these stories?  Each novel or collection of stories is so much fun to read, its a good thing that Wodehouse wrote over 100 novels!
 
• The Barsoom Series by Edgar Rice Burroughs

    The author of Tarzan also wrote science fiction stories set on the planet Mars.  Although the ten stories in the series are repetitive and can get boring if you read tooo many at one time, these are fun books to read over the summer.

NonFiction

• The Roots of American Order by Russell Kirk

    This book explains the origins of American democratic ideas and traces their roots back to Israel, Greece, Rome, and Medieval and Renaissance Europe.  Kirk explains why it is important for americans to understand world history.
 
• The End of History and the Last Man by Francis Fukuyama

    Fukuyma argues that history has reached an end; no more major historical developments will occurr since capitalism and democracy have become accepted throughout the world.  Are his conclusions accurate?  It's too soon to tell.
 
• The Confessions Saint Augustine

    One of the first autobiographies, this tells the story of Augustine's long delayed conversion to Christianity.  This book also presents a picture of the intellectual life of the late Roman Empire
 
• Intellectuals Paul Johnson

    Have the intellectuals of the past 200 years helped to advance human society, or has their advice been destructive?  Johnson argues that intellectuals like Rousseau, Shelley and Tolstoy have done more harm than good.

• The Symphonies of Anton Bruckner

    Austrian composer of the late Romanitic Era (1800s), Bruckner's music can range from very emotional to icy and stoic.  In any event, his symphonies are large compositions that ask for repeated listening. Begin with the Fourth Symphony; it is the "easiest" to listen to.
 
• The Brandenburg Concertos by J.S. Bach

    Possibly the best concertos from the Baroque Era (1700s).  An excellent intorduction to this era's music, or classical music in general.
 
• Les Preludes by Franz Liszt

    In my opinion, the most inspirational tone poems ever written.  Les Preludes tells musically about man's stuggles, disapointments and final triumph.  If you like this, you might also be interested in A Hero's Life by Richard Strauss.
 
• Requiem by Gabriel Faure

    Faure's mass is a very tranquil, peaceful compostition.   Such a beautiful work must be heard to be appreciated.
 
• Trout Quintet by Franz Shubert

    My favorite piece of chamber music, this is written for a string quartet and a piano.  The name derives from the name of the song that Shubert used in part of the Quintent.

• Medieval and Rennaisance Music.

    Naxos puts out a fine collection of Early Music.  There is great variety in this field.  Try Gregorian Chat, Troubadour Songs, Renaissance Dances, French Chansons, English Madrigals.  Especially good collections include music from Medieval Spain.  Pallestrina's music is a must as well.

Not only do I not recomend the above musicians(?) I heartily condemn Slipknot.  Not only do they lack any musical talent (Music is made up of rhythm, harmony and melody; many modern "musicians" forget that there is more to music than rhythm), their antisocial message is certainly unhealty for the mind.
