A fascinating study of the intersection of madness and lexicography. Rating A+ for anyone interested in either topic. Some disquieting hematic descriptions, etc.
Future OED editors may wish to note the example of a double negative construction at the foot of p. 110: Would not this astonishing young man (Murray was then just over forty) not be the ideal candidate? || The unspeakable nature of the topic notwithstanding, I'm so surprised not to have heard of the candiru (p. 192) that I half suspect the author of making it up: An attack by the renowned Brazilian fishlet known as candiru, which likes to swim up a man's urine stream and lodge in the urethra with a ring of retrorse spines preventing its removal, is one of the very rare circumstances in which doctor [sic] will perform the operation, known as a peotomy. Reminds me not a little of fungally infected Megaloponera foetens and like denizens of Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonder... || Aside from the candiru, the only place where the author's erudition dealt me a blank was this from the top of p. 197: All the casual inconveniences of old age were being piled onto his madness, each a Pelion upon Ossa [my emphasis], until William Minor was no more than a thin and elderly wretch, feared by no one, pitied by all.

Kvankam la tuto estas ĉarmega kaj supozeble somalaj infanoj tre ĝuus la ilustraĵojn, mi opinias malprobable, ke ili komprenus la aludojn al Pinokjo; la ĉevalo Belo; Kokineto (kiu timas, ke la ĉielo falos); la Botkatino; kaj kompreneble La Rano-Princo. Al mi ŝajnas strangege, ke oni somaligis "Pinokjon" kiel "Baynookiyoo" (kial ne "Binookiyoo"? ĉu britoj kutime prononcas la unuan silabon de Pinocchio kun la diftongo el "sigh"?). Kaj ĉu somalaj ranoj vere blekas "Waan akhriyay!"??! Mi dubas. Ĉu ranoj en Esperantujo blekas "Ĝinlegis!"? Ke nepre preferinda estus reverko surbaze de indiĝenaj fabeloj (kaj indiĝenaj vortludoj), mi opinias.
