The Three Souls:

The Psychic Structure of the Human Being

Beautiful Peacock

In the Feri tradition, human awareness is composed of three spirits, souls or selves. Each is focused in a particular place in our body--in the physical body and in our psychic body. Each soul is known by a number of names.

A Brief Introduction

An integral part of the Faery Tradition, the Three Souls help us understand how we function, help us integrate our various parts of our being, and help us move energy for magical work.

The Three Souls have a variety of names, each of which helps describe them better. They are known in many cultures, and different Faery teachers may accent one set of names more than another. Basically, they may be called the intuitive Younger Self, the conscious Talking Self, and the divine God Self.

We are usually most aware of our Talking Self who basically functions on a day to day level. But we need to learn more about our other two selves in order to function more fully as sacred priests and priestesses, and in order to work effective magic, because our Talking Self is not in direct communication with our God Self. It is the Younger Self, also called the Fetch, who can communicate with both our Talking Self and our God Self.

Aligning the Three Selves actually takes a lot of necessary healthy work, to keep good clear communication open from Talking Self to the Fetch to the God Self and back again. The Fetch is the key to this. It not just an intermediary.

The First Soul

First is the Fetch. It deals wordlessly with the worlds through pure sensations, emotions, and images, which may be visual or auditory. The Fetch contains all memory of past experiences from which emerges the survival instinct, the need to seek food, shelter, and sex.

The Fetch is located in the belly, about 4 fingersbreadth below the navel. It has a direct connection to our Bird Spirit. It also lives in our Unconscious mind. The Unconscious is, paradoxically, always aware. It is called "unconscious" because the Second Soul is usually not conscious of it.

The Second Soul

Second is the Talker. It is the conscious mind. It rationalizes and defines the sensory experiences of the Fetch. It also contains our social instinct, our need to relate to others.

The Talker is located in the center of the chest and, as previously stated, in our conscious mind.

The Third Soul

Third is the Bird Spirit. This is our God-Self, the part which realizes our connection with the Divine. It can possibly know the past, present, and future.

The Bird Spirit dwells in our Body of Light. Our Light Body is part of our body, but not of solid material. Rather it is part of our Psychic Body which surrounds our physical body. The Bird Spirit is just above the top of our head in the Light Body and is anchored in our inner brain, in the exact center of our head. It is connected to the God-selves of others.

In order to communicate with our Bird Spirit, the Talker must first contact the Fetch, which can then communicate with our Bird Spirit, for the Bird Spirit is connected to the Fetch by a fine astral chord.

The Energies of the Spirits

The energy of the Fetch has several names. It is called Raith-power, mana, prana, and Blue Fire. It is generated by healthful food, clean air and water, physical exercise and sex. It is the raw energy that keeps beings alive, and can be compared to biological electricity.

Second is thought, the energy of the mind, embodied in brain waves. This is astral energy and the astral plane is composed of the combined energies of all beings.

Third is the energy of the Bird-Spirit. It is called Baraka, mana-loa, energy of the Gods, and White Fire. It is generated by the existence of the universe and descends through the order of creation, from galactic clusters to plaetary life forms.
