This is our tentative schedule for the 2008-2009 school year. It is not set in stone and if we require more time in one area than in another we will take it. For example, there will be days when we need 2 periods for math but others when we will not. Some of the science experiments we will undertake this year, will require more than the 2 periods, while others will require less. Keeping all of this in mind, here is our schedule.
~Our Schedule~
The primary focus in grade 3 is literacy and numeracy, with the most emphasis being placed on literacy. This is why you see such large blocks of time devoted to this. The double periods of literacy will consist of reading and writing activities. We will using the DAily 5 and 6+1 Traits of Writing format for our literacy purposes this year. The Daily 5 will have the children working through 5 literacy based activities each day; Read to Self, Read to Somebody, Writing, Word Work, and Listening. Each day the children will havethe opportunity to choose the order in which they will complete the activities. Durign this time I will be taking guided reading groups and conductin individual reading conferences with children. We will be using the "Planning Board" to help us know which activities to go to. As well, there will be a great deal of practicing our activity routines during the first 6 weeks of school. I am hoping to be able to begin our guided reading groups and Daily 5 activities immediately following Thanksgiving. However, this will all depend on whether the children are ready for this at this time If they are not then we will not attempt it until they are. Our writing programme this year will be using The 6+1 Traits of Writing. This 6 Traits are : Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation. The fourth language block that you see on the schedule in the afternoon will be used for learning cursive writing and problem solving. This portion of the programme will be taught by Mrs. Goad.
