Why am I Muslim?

by Omar Kandeel

All Praise be to Allah the Lord of the universe and may all the Peace and Blessings be upon His Prophet Mohammad and upon all the messengers and prophets of Allah.

The world is filled with beliefs and religions. All of which certainly claim that they are the ones that possess the Truth. Amidst such a tremendous global culture of belief system I had to ask myself why am I a Muslim? Of course I was born Muslim and both my parents have been Muslim and I was always raised in a Muslim country. But to me that is not enough. So I had to ask myself, why am I sure that I am in the Truthful path? Why would I be confident that what my parents taught me was true? Could I be wrong? Could my parents and my family and whole society be all wrong? That is an inevitable question. And no one can really answer that question but myself.

To start with I had to ask myself "Does God exist?" A question that has different answers among different people around that world. People who deny the existence of God would say: "We don’t see God?" or "How do I know God created the universe, it could have been my girlfriend?" or "How can there be a God when there is a lot of killing an injustice in the world?" and so on. To my surprise such statements were actually said to me from very well educated and highly ‘philosophical’ people! It is interesting to know that it was only with the existence of communism that a group of people emerged who denied that there is a God. And why not? For religion is the "opium of the masses" as Karl Marx proclaimed. If God doesn’t exist then religion doesn’t exist, since religion is intertwined with God

If there is one fact that I feel cannot be denied it is the existence of God. An Arab poet once said that the tracks in the desert are proof of the traveler who made them, and all creation is proof of the existence of God. The human digestive system is one example. During chewing, if the saliva glands secrete more saliva than needed the food gets dissolved and disappears before being swallowed and assimilated. If less saliva than needed is secreted the food becomes a burden on the digestive system and cannot be assimilated. Was the exact amount needed secreted by coincidence? When food enters the stomach the glands are stimulated such that the proper enzymes are secreted to digest the food. When the food is digested secretion automatically stops and the intestines develop rhythmic muscular contractions to move the food along the intestines. During this all the useful nutritious substances are absorbed to the blood stream. The harmful waste is left out till it is eventually expelled out of the body. Did such a precise automated system exist by coincidence?

Scientists also proved that had the distance between the earth and the sun been 1mm less the earth would have been burnt into flames. Had the distance been 1mm more it would have been frozen. Was this accurate distance there by coincidence? Not only is the distance accurate, but there is also this invisible layer known as the ozone layer that protects the earth from the dangerous ultra violet radiations. Is this complete buildup there by mere coincidence?

People and animals around the world need oxygen. They can survive without food and water for perhaps days. But just a few seconds withoug oxygen is fatal for any living organism. Oxygen is breathed and consumed and is exhaled as carbon dioxide. Plants take in the carbon dioxide and use it to make their food in a sophisticated chemical reaction known as photosynthesis. The product from photosynthesis is again oxygen, which is again breathed by us; and the cycle goes on and on making life possible! Was the placement of such an astounding and well-calculated system just a coincidence?

All this is not even a drop from an ocean of all the wonders of creation in our universe. There must have been a Supreme Being who made this accurate automated universe. To say otherwise is like saying that cars can drive in streets, obey traffic lights and stop with their brakes without a driver! So I think the existence of God is an indubitable fact. To me, whoever denies the existence of God is like he who denies the existence of the sun in the middle of the day! I cannot but feel really sorry for such people.

Not only does the universe stand as an amazing witness to the existence of God, His Genius, His Power and His Might, but it also proves that there is only One God, and no God but Him. If I like green and my wife likes blue and we decide to paint our house, the result will be nothing but a big mess (assuming of course both of us try to impose our own taste and there is no united word.) If there is all this uniformity and regularity in all creation then logically there is only one system (or one ‘taste’) with which the whole universe works.

It has been a rule that the sun rises from the east and sets in the west. Never has the sun, for example, risen from the west and set in the east. Or never has it ever abstained from rising or setting. Even the lengths of the days and nights around the world have been uniform. During summer, day is longer than night. During winter, night is longer than day. The further countries are from the equator the longer the day becomes during summer. The exact same length applies for night during winter. This surprising proportion in the lengths of day and night is obviously evidence that there is one system by which day and night goes. The moon also changes shape during the month. It starts as a crescent, then half-moon then full-moon, then back to half moon, and so on. Regularity of the moon is so precise that the Arabs used to document their calendar with the routine change in the moon’s shape (and the Muslims still do so till this day.) This is another sign of consistency. That same moon revolves regularly around the earth, and the earth revolves regularly around the sun. Like earth, all the planets of the solar system revolve around the sun and the satellites revolve around their planets. This constant regular motion not only applies at the scale of the universe, but also applies to every single atom! Each atom has its nucleus that has its electrons revolving around it. Today science has also discovered particles that are even smaller than electrons such that every single atom is like a solar system itself with these particles revolving around the nucleus of the atom!

What art and supremacy is this! There is one set of standard laws that govern the whole universe and that never change. The very definition of science is the study of the standard observed phenomena in the universe. Had there not been such standard laws and phenomena then sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Medicine and the like are baseless!

If my wife and I would cause chaos if each one of us tries to impose his view over the other, then how would such an amazing and regular universe exist if there were more than one God? If there is one system that rules creation then it was definitely only One Divine Being that put such a system. Otherwise every ‘god’ would have controlled what he created the way he pleases and we would not witness such regularities.

If there is one God and no Divine Being but Him then all pagan cultures are definitely far from the Truth. For that reason the Truth lies within the monotheistic religions. The main monotheistic religions are Judaism, Christianity and Islam. So why am I Muslim and not Jew or Christian?

I don’t believe that Judaism is Truth because I think Judaism is an unjust faith. Justice is a concept that is believed in worldwide. Throughout history there has always been a struggle between two parties (or more) in which one has been historically documented as the tyrannical side and the other as the fighter for justice. The French revolution, the Scottish revolution under William Wallace, the 1952 coup in Egypt could all be perceived as examples. Of course to claim which party is the tyrannical one and which is the fighter for justice depends on who is documenting history. Regardless, I can conclude that every single human being has an idea of what justice is, and that there are people who fight that justice. People can get romantic and say that Justice always wins (so would the French, or the supporters of the 1952 coup would say.) Perhaps that statement is right. But even if I assume it is not (meaning we can’t really know whether Justice will win or not) there is one thought that I cannot let go of: Justice has a protector. If my rights have been snatched from me and I have no one to help me, I cannot help the instinctive thought that God will help me and that God is with me. If God is the Almighty and the most Powerful then He can help me and give me victory if I deserve it. An analytical person would ask "What makes you sure that God is Just and will thus implement Justice?" I would answer: "I have no idea!" It is just an instinctive feeling that automatically arises within me. I simply ‘feel’ like seeking help from the Supreme Being. Knowing that I am between His hands gives me hope and serenity, and so it feels so right, and it ‘keeps me going’ as people say. It is as if God has build human nature and instinct in this way so that it can recognize Him and Believe in Him.

If God is the protector of Justice then God is Just. If God is Just then Judaism is definitely not the religion of Truth. In the holy books of the Jews (Torah and Talmud) the Jews are the ‘chosen ones.’ In their faith, they are an elite race that God has chosen to bless and strengthen. Thus the Jews are decreed to be the rulers of the world, the rest of which are supposed to be at their service. I have read in a book once a quote (in Arabic) from the Old Testament that says: "God has blessed the kingdom of Israel; And has blessed those who bless it; And has cursed those who curse it." (1) A friend of mine had also once told me that a person cannot really convert to Judaism. The reason is because one is either from the ‘chosen ones’ or is not. Just like one is either white or black. A White person cannot ‘convert’ to being black. Motivated by such a belief, the state of Israel was founded. To the Jews, led by Theodore Hertzel, Palestine was "A land with no people for people with no land" despite that the Palestinians were living there. But that doesn’t make a difference sine the Palestinians are not really ‘people’ since they are not from the chosen ones. The Jews performed massacres and confiscated land and kicked people from their homes in order to build their Jewish state. They continue to do so up to this day. Palestinian blood to them is cheap and unimportant. When Barokh Goldstein killed several Palestinians while they prayed in Hebron, Goldstein was considered a hero and his grave a site of pilgrimage. When asked about their opinions on the Goldstein massacre people gave responses like "Well he didn’t kill enough but it’s an ok start" and "He is a hero, I wish I had his courage." When the Palestinians try to defend themselves they become ‘cursed’ since God curses who curses Israel according to the quote that I mentioned above.

The Jews of course view all this as Justice since they are the ‘chosen ones’ and Palestine is their promised land. And their holy books confirm this attitude of theirs. I personally cannot see this as Justice by any means. I can only view this as tyranny and oppression. To be a Jew, I have to accept that all these horrible crimes are actually blessed by God who blesses His ‘chosen people’ and puts them as rulers over the whole world. Since I am certain that God is just and fair I am positive that God does not bless these absurdities. Thus I cannot believe that Judaism is the Truth.(2)

Furthermore, Icannot accept that Christianity is Truth. I find a lot of illogical and contradictory elements in the Christian faith. One of the things I cannot accept in Christian faith is that Jesus is God. I can make such a claim from the Bible itself. In the Bible it is mentioned that Jesus ate food, was tired, rested and slept. If Jesus ate food then he needed to excrete the wastes from the food he ate. Is it believable that the Most Perfect would have waste within Him? Is it logical that the Most Complete would be in need of something He Himself created (name food)? Is it plausible that the Most Powerful becomes tired and in need of rest? To say that Jesus is God is an insult to God and an offensive underestimation of His Glory and Greatness. Also, there is nowhere in the Bible where Jesus is quoted saying that he was God and that he be worshiped!

I also reject the idea that Jesus ‘died for our sins’ and that we have to believe that he is our savior in order to go to heaven. This is the essence of injustice. If I kill someone, does my brother pay the death penalty? In short, I cannot accept the manner in which Christians perceive Jesus.

Another thing that my intellect cannot accept is the Trinity. What Christians tell me is that there is one God and that that God is composed of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They would give the example of a phone. The phone has a wire, a receiver and a keypad. But still it’s one phone. So when we say the Father, the Son or Holy Spirit we refer to the same thing. I think this makes no sense. It cannot be said that there is a part A, another part B, and another part C, and say they are all one. The wire is not the receiver, and the receiver is not the keypad. This is an obvious defiance with the simple rules of logic. Also, in the Bible it is said that the Father sends his son to earth, and that the son prays to the Father. (3) So did God ‘send Himself’ to earth? Was God ‘praying to Himself?’ How can the Bible treat the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as different beings, and then it would still be expected to perceive them as one. That is a major contradiction in the Bible. Christians themselves admitted to me that the Trinity is illogical but they believe in it because it is a matter of faith and not logic. I cannot give up my brainpower, with which I was able to know God, and take an illogical concept for granted for the sake of ‘faith’ when I have no reason to do so. If I assume it is truly from God then I would be prepared to accept it. However, Christians themselves are different in the Trinity issue and there were conferences after the death of Jesus where they wanted to discuss whether the Trinity is valid or not. (4) And today there is a sect of Christianity that does not believe in the Trinity. (5) There are even very valid theories that the idea of the Trinity originated from Indian pagan mythology. So there are a lot of question marks around the Trinity being a revelation from God. Furthermore, even if I chose to believe in the Trinity regardless, it only means that God is divisible. If God is divisible then God can be broken down. In my opinion that is a sign of imperfectness that is inappropriate to associate with the Perfect and Complete One.

I also have to say that I think the Bible is not the Word of God. The Bible has a lot of faults and errors. That is not my claim, but it is the claim of fifty of the most credible and trusted Christian scholars. (6) So if the Christian scholars say that it has a lot of errors and faults how can I accept that God’s Word contains faults and errors when I am sure that God does not make mistakes? And I would also say that the Bible contains a verse that I find outrageous. A verse that says that Jacob wrestled God and actually beat God and told him "I won’t leave you till you bless me and my people!" after which God blessed him and changed his name to Israel! How more insulting to the Almighty can you get? And the interesting thing is the Christians have no problem whatsoever with accepting such a verse!

Also the Bible is written in third person form. For example there are verses such as "The Father told the son" and "The son told the Father." If the Bible was the Word of God then what should be found is "I told my son" and "My son told me." Indeed the Christians themselves admit that the Bible was written by people who were chosen by God. If this is the case then one must also ask why then are there many different versions of the stories in the Bible with extremely variant contents? (7) Will God reveal different and contradicting "books"? I also think that it is the belief that God chooses people to represent Him on earth (like the writers of the Bible) was a belief that hurt the Christians themselves. The priests had a lot of control over the State and they would say simply who God blessed and whom He cursed. And people believed them since they believed God chose them. There was a lot of tyranny to the extent that they used to take vast amounts of money from the people in return for ‘contracts’ signed by these priests with which the people purchase land in heaven! The priests also stood in the way of scientific advancement when the new theories contradicted Christian belief. Galileo is a clear example when he claimed the earth revolves around the sun. That is why it is no surprise that the people eventually revolted against the church and commenced what is known as the Renaissance and adopted what is today known as secularism.

From all the contradictions and irrational beliefs that I mentioned I cannot accept that Christianity is the Truth either. So now only Islam remains. So why would Islam prevail over Judaism and Christianity?

Contrary to Judaism and Christianity, Islam is acceptable to my mind and companionable with my instinct. Mohammad claimed to have a message. His message was directed to the whole world and he started with pagan Arab society from which he came from. He told them to abandon the worship of stones and worship one God solely. I already believe in the existence of one God and in His divine characteristics. Therefore, I cannot but agree with such a call and support it.

He claimed to be the messenger of God. How should I know that he was indeed the messenger of God? Well it is documented in history that the Arabs considered Mohammad to be "the honest and trustworthy one." They used to leave large sums of their wealth and money with him. When he first told them he was a messenger from God he said: "Would you believe me if I told you there is an army right behind that wants to invade you?" They spontaneously replied: "We never knew you lied." So Mohammad was definitely not a liar. Also Mohammad was an extraordinary leader. He achieved an extraordinary transformation in the life of the Arabs. These Arabs were indwelled in ignorance, wrath, lust, tyranny and feebleness. They were also worshippers of stones. Mohammad was successful in defeating all his enemies in the Arabian Peninsula and established a strong state. Not only was the state established, but also his followers were able to defeat the two superpowers at that time (the Roman and Persian empires) and the Islamic state spread from China to Spain. While Europe lived in darkness, the Muslims excelled in Mathematics, Chemistry, Medicine and others. Not until the Muslims started to abandon the heritage that Mohammad left them did they decline and become the weakest of nations in this world. It is not strange to be amazed by the character of Mohammad and claim that he was an unbelievable character. All surveys I am aware of didn’t unanimously agree that he was the most influential person in history for nothing. It is also normal to be stunned at the religion he preached that made the lowest of people in Arabia to be rulers of the then known world!

Mohammad was also known to be illiterate. Despite that he was able to come up with the Quran. All scholars in the Arabic language admit that the Quran is a unique linguistic masterpiece that has no equivalent in history. Science has also come to discover facts not known except during the twentieth century. These facts had always been stated in the Quran long before they were discovered. Not only are such scientific facts so many but the Quran also tells its reader that people will get to know that the Quran is Truth when they look in the Earth and Heavens, and when they look within themselves (as it was a challenge.) So this is also a prediction for the future. (8) Furthermore, very accurate numerical balances have also been discovered in the Quran. Examples of such numerical balances are: Number of references to heaven equal the number of mentions in hell; References of Faith equal the references to disbelief; References to Man equal the references to Woman; etc. There are several such balances and numerical regularities to the extent that I cannot help be astonished from the precision. (9)  Knowing all this I cannot help but wonder how was Mohammad, who was illiterate, capable of coming up with such outstanding phenomena. He claimed that it was not from him but that the Quran was God’s Word revealed to him. This would make sense, since such an achievement would seem impossible on an illiterate man like Mohammed but extremely easy for God Almighty. Also the fact that Mohammad did not claim owning such an astounding book draws me close to believing that Mohammad is indeed the messenger of God. Also, there are a number of verses that address Mohammad in a reprimanding-like way. (10)  For example, there are verses that tell Mohammad "Fear God" and warn him from not delivering the message with which he was entrusted. Another set of verses that inform him of his mistake of not giving a blind man attention when the blind man asked for it. Also these verses say that Mohammad gave an irritated face to the blind man (who normally didn’t give such a face to anybody). (11) Referring to that particular verse it is documented that Mohammad covered his face in shyness when these verses were revealed to him. So why would Mohammad embarrass himself with such verses and similar ones? This convinces me even more that the Quran cannot be his, and thus pulls me closer to believing that he indeed the messenger of God.

Exploring the teachings of Mohammad only invites one to love and respect him and his message. He called for worshiping God and God alone. He taught his followers to love one another and help and support one another, and become like one united body. He taught his followers to be honest and trustworthy and not to lie or deceive. He was the first to honour women and gave them rights that they had never got before him. He fought slavery, taught his followers modesty and to be kind and supportive to the poor, needy and orphans. He taught them that the best person was the one who feared God most and respected Him most, and not who was stronger or richer or who excelled in similar worldly measures. Above all this he taught his followers that God was the Most Merciful and Most Gracious, and that God loves His creatures and slaves and that God ‘obligated on Himself to be merciful.’ I would ask anyone to just ponder the concept that the Most Powerful and Almighty, who can make us all live in misery and destroy us for no reason if He wished (with no one objecting to Him since He is the King of the universe) has chosen to ‘force’ Himself to be merciful instead! To my glorification and fear of God Mohammad teaches something that I never knew before, and that is to truly and intensely ‘love’ God. Such a thought not only fills my heart with passion towards the Most Merciful, but it gives me eternal hope in life and an enormous desire to see Him and feel Him! My heart cannot help feel touched with all this unprecedented knowledge of the nature of God. I cannot deny the prophecy of Mohammad any more, and so I bear witness that there is no God but Him and that Mohammad is His messenger!

The more I have come to learn about Islam the more I love it and believe in it. I can confidently claim that I profess the religion of Truth. I also feel an urge to invite people all around the world to Islam and have them see the wonders that I have seen in this great religion. I know it is hard for someone to change his or her faith. However, I invite everyone to read about Islam for himself or herself and see what it has to offer. And like Allah said in His Glorious book "Say the Truth has been revealed from your Lord; may whoever believe if he wishes and may whoever disbelieve if he wish."(12)
