MATERIALS NEEDED:
1) Blank Bingo sheet. The sheet should have the letters "BINGO" written across the top, with five boxes below each letter, and the middle box (3rd under the letter N) labelled "Free". 2) Word Bank (provided at the bottom of this page) 3) Scraps of paper with words from the word bank written on them.
PROCEDURE:
1. Photocopy enough blank Bingo sheets for each student in the class and distribute them.
2. Either photocopy and distribute to the class or write on the board the words form the word bank, and have students fill in the boxes on their cards by randomly choosing words form the bank. They should write only one word in each box.
3. Place the scraps of paper with words from the word bank in a box, and have one student be the "caller".
4. Pick words one at a time from the box. If the word called appears on a student's card, she should mark or highlight it.
5. Several games can be played this way. I play "straight Bingo" first: a student needs to get a straight line either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Next I play "four corners": students need to have the first and last words under "B" and "O" covered. If there is time, I play "round robin": students should have all of the edges covered, like a frame (all of "B" and "O", and the first and last in "I", "N" and "G"). The last game is for the whole board. The same Bingo card may be used for each game, with words previously called and highlighted on students' cards remaining so for each successive game.
6. Each time a student calls "BINGO", she must read the winning words and give the correct definitions for all of them. If any of her definitions are incorrect, the game continues. |
