Empires in Arms
Empires in Arms
In spite of the recent rush to computer games, I prefer boardgames. For strategic games especially, the atmosphere of a group of players hovering over a map is completely lost with computers. The premiere strategic wargame IMHO is Empires in Arms.
The game is a simulation of napoleonic Europe. It does not attempt to recreate the wars so much as the atmosphere of the wars. Players find themselves making similar decisions to what the rulers and generals at the time had to decide. The hallmark of an excellent game.
The game is very elegant: meaning it achieves the effect with simple rules. This does leave the way open for many additional rules to be created. There are also many variant scenarios for the game including: the Seven Years War and the Greath Northern War.
These are the optional rules I have created.
