I am a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a group of medieval enthusiasts who take time to study the life and culture of the medieval period and to preserve the culture, the learning and the traditions of the middle ages. We preserve this culture in two ways: by direct study of the resources that we have from that period; and by attending events where we re-create life in the middle ages. When we do the first, we proceed like any other scholar: reading books, studying artifacts, visting historic sties, and conversing on our theories and discoveries with other enthusiasts and scholars. When we do the second, an event site is changed for a weekend (and sometimes longer!) into a medieval encampment.  Everyone who attends dresses in period clothing, engages in period activities, sleeps in period tents--a complete re-creation of medieval life.

For the purposes of organization, the overall group of the SCA is referred to as the "Known World".  The Known World is divided into a number of Kindoms.  Within each kingdom are further smaller divisions for organization and cooperation of local groups.  From largest to smallest, these are: Baronies, Shires, cantons, and colleges.  There are other divisions, but these are the most common.
