Because of the Vietnam War, and others before it, Vietnam became a very poor country. From 1979 to 1992, it was economically isolated from the world. International aid was entirely cut off execpt by fellow communist countries close by. Many crop fields were destroyed. South Vietnam lost many of it's traditions and was forced to join North Vietnam as one country. It was also forced to become communist. The U.S. had spent more time in the Vietnam War than any other war in it's history and had lost, (which was a rare occurance.) The war had turned many American civilians against the government and military. It had led to protests including the one at Kent State University where four students were killed. For America, there were no advantages to entering Vietnam in the first place. |
