THE GEORGIA ARCHAEOLOGY INFORMATION PAGE

If you have any items that you think may be prehistoric artifacts and would like to know more about them, please click the button and  leave a description or inquiry and an e-mail address. Someone from the Society for Georgia Archaeology or Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists will contact you, and try to answer any questions you may have.

If you know the location of an archaeological site that you think may not be officially recorded in the Georgia Archaeological Site File, and you wish to have it recorded, please contact the Georgia Archaeological Site File at the University of Georgia in Athens. Recording archaeological sites is very important because the information that they contain, no matter how small the site is, enhances our understanding of Georgia's cultural heritage. Please note that reporting the location of an archaeological site does not mean someone will attempt to excavate the property with or without permission, or that future development plans for the property will be in danger. 

You can find out about volunteering for archaeological digs by contacting a local or state-level archaeological organization. In most southern states, there are usually several excavations conducted each year that invite volunteers to participate.  In Georgia, volunteer efforts are enlisted via the Society for Georgia Archaeology, which has several local chapters.  The Passport in Time program sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service also sponsors volunteer excavations in Georgia and throughout the United States.
