"In pursuance of an act of the Congress of the United States of America, entitled an "Act concerning the registering and recording of ships and vessels," George Howland of Newport in the State of Rhode Island having taken or subscribed the oath required by the said Act, and having sworn that he is the sole and only owner of the ship or vesel [sic] called the Ion of New London whereof George Howland is a present master and a citizen of the United Stated, as he has sworn, and that the said ship or vesel [sic] was formerly the Spanish schooner 'Amistad,' but was sold by the order of the United States Court, and has been nationalized by an Act of Congress and John French surveyor of the Customs, having certified that the said ship or vesel [sic] has one deck and two masts and that here length is sixty four feet, her breadth nineteen feet and nine inches, her depth six feet and six inches, and that she measures seventy and 46/95 tons, that she is a schooner, has a square stern, no galleries and an eagle head; and the said George Howland, having agreed to the description and admeasurement above specified, and sufficient security having been given, according to the said Act, the said schooner has been duly registered at the Port of New London. Given under my hand and seal at the Port of New London this second day of June in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty one." |
