What this is..
The possibility of this project is to create a volunteer group who will translate courses in
The Curriculum for Living given by The Landmark Education Corporation . These courses would be translated into AMESLAN (American Standard Sign Language) for the benefit of
the deaf and hard of hearing.
This project would currently be centered in the Philadelphia, PA area with the possibility of
expanding to other areas of the world where volunteers would like to expand the project to.
We also need to raise funds to be able to support this website on a commercial hosting service,
and to fund the creating and mailing of informational flyers. Our first goal is $5000.00 by August 31st, 1999.
At the time of this writing, $30.00 have been raised.
Why this project exists..
This project exists because I (the author of this site, Al Hartman) am the child of deaf parents.
My childhood was much different than the childhood of other children I grew up with. Except those of other children
of deaf parents.
Each of us has grown up into different lives. Some of the other children of deaf parents I grew
up with have gone into drugs, poverty, dependence, and other types of existences.
I know that in my family, communication was on a very basic level.
From attending The
Landmark Forum, I watched many people create and re-create great relationships with parents,
children, siblings, relatives, in-laws, friends, and co-workers. These were the least of the miracles that people
created from the Landmark Forum. I watched people create futures for themselves.
My thought is that if I had taken The Landmark Forum 25 years earlier (had it been available then), my life would
be vastly different. And had the other children of deaf parents had taken these courses, their lives too would
be different.
Another reason this project exists is that I am at the time of this writing (August 8th, 1999),
taking a course in The Curriculum
for Living called The Self Expression and Leadership Program (SELP). One of the requirements
of this program is that the participants source a project that "lights them up".
Well, this project is definitely one that lights me up. The idea of helping other deaf families
create more possibilities in their lives, and have the freedom of creating a live they love is very exciting to
me.
If it excites you, use the link at the bottom of the page to contact us to volunteer time, money
or to help us in any way to make this a reality.
More details, and how you can help..
An ideal starting size for such a group is 20 people. The more volunteers we have, the better
the services we can provide.
At first, we would prefer only trained interpreters volunteer. Providing these services accurately
is important, and in order to provide this service to Landmark Education, we will need to be responsible for accurately
transmitting their course information.
To this end, a requirement for the volunteers would be that they had previously attended the
course that they would be translating.
