The Matrix

Sometimes, I question reality. I wonder if I really exist. I wonder if everyone else exists. When I was a child I wondered if people were a figment of some giant's imagination, a complex dream of which I was an unknowing part. After watching The Matrix I think the screenwriters must have had the same musings.

This is a fast, hip film about reality and what reality is. I'm not still not sure, as this film asks more questions than it answers. However, this is to its credit as I prefer thought-provoking films to those that cross every "t" and dot every "i".

The stars are well chosen. Keanu Reeves manages to look like both a cyberpunk and a downtrodden company employee. He is having a good film here, it isn't one of his sleepwalking roles. He plays Neo, who may or may not be The Chosen One, the person to free humankind from the mechanoid prison it exists in. Carrie Anne Moss , whom I'm most familiar with from her stint on Models Inc. is an interesting choice for Trinity, the cyberbabe who can kick some serious butt. She looks great in tight leather, and also has a brain between her ears. Laurence Fishburne is Morpheus, the leader of a rag-tag bunch of rebels/terrorists. He believes that Neo (Reeves) can help free mankind. And then there is Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith, the mechanoid hunter.

Some movies depend heavily on the special effects, and The Matrix is no exception. Here they are terrific. I've never seen people walk up walls, dodge bullets, or stall in mid-air like they do in this film. The world, the real world, according to the film is a dark, burnt out place, but the world of the Matrix is alive with colour. It's a tough choice to make...a drab, dangerous reality or a world filled with things we take for granted...steak, sunshine, and working for a living. After all is said and done though, it is just a movie,
isn't it?

On the Stella system, I give it
****1/2 starstruck stars out of 5. This is a great sci-fi flick. If it piques your interest, go and see it.
