No one is asking me.

I am not even American.

Still I must be heard:

I surprised delegates to the GOP convention at the Wyndham emerald plaza (San Diego) in august 1996 when I boldly declared "I am democrat". They all knew I was a visiting Nigeria businessman (if you can call me that). I went on and on (to the rapt attention of my listeners) - all white explaining why blacks had to be included. One of them was Barbara, from the Rockies - possibly Colorado, vice chairperson GOP. Why did they listen to me so attentively? What is it I got? Funny accent, Budweiser in hand, short knickers? Such is America's ingrained freedom of expression that total strangers listened to a foreigner lampooning their very own political party.

Everything written above is a pure representation of fact. I'm on the runway of artistic liberty now - be warned.

Most of us foreigners stand and applaud America less for her technological prowess than for being an everlasting monument to man's quest for 'justness in this world - now'

We stand and applaud America for institutionalising legalistic chaos - creative tension if you will geared towards ensuring the equality of all persons under God, for respect for the individual (the poor, the weak huddled masses, the heart broken brokenhearted).

Recall l'affaire Lewinsky? Recall Starr's report? Yeah the one which said nothing new - nothing unsuspected. It uncovered no new grounds. Not even the semen saga. We always knew Clinton did something improper. We ourselves did not care because we all have one one time or the other been seized by reckless passion and done that of which we were more than a little ashamed.

I at that time did empathise with Starr who did as much good to democracy as damage. He did his job very well much like an automaton but even automatons are designed smart - they self destruct should their ‘marching instructions’ become garbled. Not Kenneth Starr. Not the US supreme court. Men it seemed were created - to give life and purpose to The Laws not the other way round.

There were sufficient checks and balance in the american system to ensure that minor disparities in interpretations of the law do not bring disrepute to the constitution. There was a strange inability or inclination for the learned men to do what thousands of lowly esteemed repairmen do daily: quick problem-decision analysis and fix a knotty problem. On the other hand, it may well have been their perception that Clinton was the knotty problem and therefore should be fixed. What is not in dispute is that democracy was tested to its limit.

America cannot indeed will not start all over again - no matter how hard the likes of Kenneth Starr & the new fly in the horizon - Bennett try.

He was on Larry King recently & declared imperiously "The Clinton's are a towering disgrace" I wept. I wept for those who would cloud the entire heavens with that which was no larger that a dime. I would love to patiently explain to them that: "We all are running - one kind of race or another. Only a fool of a runner would pause to criticise the technique of another. Breast the tape, and if you are still up to it, put a weary arm around the one and lovingly correct. Be humble about the foibles of others. Love them. Pray for them.

America still will not start all over again. Accept what life throws at you.

Leave Clinton Alone. You would deny a man his peace of mind, and then deny him his neurosis?

Let him be!! I beg you.
