Salaamun Alaykum,

The question below is similar to the one that appeared recently about
praying with Ahl-al-Sunnah, but this one deals with the Juma Namaaz.
The answer was kindly provided by Moulana Sayyid Rizvi.

Wasalaam,

Mustafa Rawji

QUESTION:

Are Shias allowed to read Juma (Friday) prayers in a sunni
jamaat?

If so then what niyatt would the shia have to make and would the
procedure be the same?

w'salam

ANSWER:

Salaamun alaykum.

For the sake of unity, the Shi`as may join the jum`a prayer led by a Sunni
imam and follow the procedure observed in their jamaat. However, remember
two important points:

1. It will not be counted as jum`a; he will have to say the zuhr prayer on
his own.

2. The niyyat has to be furada (e.g., qaza of a subh prayer) which means
that you will have to recite the surahs by yourself; but, remember, you
should recite the surahs in the silent mode.

This is the opinion of all the maraji` of the present time since all say
that one of the necessary conditions found in imam-e jamaat is that he must
be a mu'min (i.e., Shi`a) and `adil.

was-salaam

Sayyid M. Rizvi
