Hasnain Kassamali. Mustafa Rawji ______________________________________________________________________ QUESTION: --[ In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful ]-- As you know, in Salat, we who follow the Prophet (PBUH&HF) and the 12 A'immah (AS) recite "Alhamdulillah" or "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil al-Amin" after the recitation of Sura al-Hamd. When we recite this, must it be silently (in any of our daily Wajib salat), or do we say it out loud?? Is it makruh to recite it loudly, or is there no objection to having it recited either way??? I am currently in the Taqlid of Ayatullah Seestani, *BUT* I would appreciate having this question answered from *ALL* of the past and present Mar'aja. ANSWER: The rules of jahriyya (reciting with a raised voice, but not shouting) applicable to Maghrib, `Ishaa' and Fajr prayers and ikhfatiyya (reciting with a low voice) applicable to Zuhr and `Asr prayers apply only to Suratul Hamd and the other sura. Also, in Zuhr and `Asr it is Mustahab to say with a raised voice the Bismillah... of the surahs. Thus, the Mustahab dhikr and/or du`a read after some suras such as "Alhamdu lillahi rabbil `alameen" after al-Hamd and "Kadhaalika 'llaahu Rabbee" after al-Tawheed can be said either with a raised or low voice. However, it is better for an Imam leading congregational prayers to say these dhikr and du`a with a raised voice so that the Ma'mumeen should not go to Ruku` before him. Going through al-`Urwatul Wuthqaa (published- Qum, 1412) which has opinions of Ayatullahs Khu'i, Khumayni, Araki and Gulpaygani in footnotes, I see no differences in their fatawa, on this issue. Moreover, I do not have the Tawdeeh of all the Maraji` mentioned above. Allah knows the best. Hasnain Kassamali Humble servant of the Ahlul Bayt (a) November 30, 1995
