Subject: re: Answer to Fish Question

The following answer to a question on fish was posted on the ABDG-A:

Question:

According to Jafari School of Fiqh, fish without scales are haram to eat.
If we are buying processed and packaged fish from supermarket (K-mart) or
buying Fillet-o-fish from Mcdonald restaurant, it is not known whether the
fish had scales or not. Is it allowed to eat such fish when it is not known
whether the fish had scales or not ?

Answer:
The information I have indicates that most of these types of fish
do have scales. However, it might be better to ask the store concerned so
as to be sure. Since most of the fish sold in the stores are either cod,
haddock or halibut all of which have scales, one may consume them unless one
is sure that they do not have scales, As a measure of precaution, it may be
better to ask the storeowner as suggested.

.......................................................................

Further Question:

I would like to clarify afew things. The first being that it is my
understanding that most COD do not have scales. The only COD with scales is
the LING COD which is by far not the most common COD sold. Secondly, I am a
little confused as to what to do if the storeowner doesn't know which fish
is being served. If it is not known can I eat it?
Thank you in advance for the reply.

Answer:

Salaamun 'Alaykum;

The information I have indicates that most of the cod fish do infact have
scales and so may be consumed.

If the storeowner does not know whether a particular fish which you wish to
buy has scales or not then it may not be consumed. I trust this will answer
your question.

Please remember me in your dua's
