QUESTION:

While my mother is in the Hospital and there is a chance that she may
pass away, a question has been put forward to me whether I have done or
have intentions of doing anything about my father's and my mother's Namaz
and Quran that they may have missed as a result of their long sickness.
Also that they may have started reciting Namaz and Quran regularly at a
later age, than they were supposed to. I would like to hear from you
regarding how one can determine how many years Namaz and Quaran my be
owed. 

Further to my question above, regarding the Namaz and Quran that have to
be recited in absentia when the person (parents) is deceased, I also
would like to know if it is the duty of the eldest son, daughter, or any
other person, or all members of the family to make sure that this is
done. Please excuse the vocabulary. 


ANSWER:

Firstly, let us remember that Qaza is repayment and repayment is only for
those actions that are obligatory and Wajib. Hence recitation of Quran
has no Qaza because it is not a wajib act. 

As for Namaz, it is wajib on the eldest son to recite the qaza prayers of
his father. 

For other sons (if the eldest has dies or is refusing to pray the qaza)
it is mustahab (recommended) to recite the qaza. If there are no sons,
then again it is mustahab for the daughter to recite - it is not wajib.
Also it is mustahab for the eldest son to recite the qaza namaz for his
mother (unlike being wajib for the father). 

In all the cases, one can hire or employ somebody else to recite the qaza
namaz for the deceased. 

If the person reciting or arranging for the qaza to be recited does not
know how many namaz the deceased missed, an estimate will be made and
acted upon accordingly.
