Wasalaam, Mustafa Rawji Moderator, ABDG-A ___________________________________________________________________________ QUESTION Please assist in clarifying the following question: Should a woman who is breast-feeding be fasting? Does the right of the nursing baby supersede the mothers' wajibaat of fasting? My mujtahid - Ayatullah Syed Ali Seestani ANSWER: 1. Among the list of the persons exempted from fasting during Ramadhan is a woman who is pregnant or breast-feeding her child -- no matter whether the woman thinks that fasting would harm her own health or that of the child. 2. However, such a woman has to do the qaza after the child-birth or after the breast-feeding is over. 3. It is also wajib on such a woman to pay fidya: to pay at least 750 grams of flour or rice per day to a poor Shi`a Ithna `Ashari. (Note: fiday is different from kaffara.)
