QUESTION:

Me and a few of my friends were thinking of visiting our graveyards on
the day of a'shura, but I heard that it is not a good idea from someone.
I just wanted to know if someone could post a reference in favor or
against this and clear this up.

ANSWER:

I have never come across any hadith imposing any restriction on visiting
a grave-yards on any particular day. On the contrary, there are numerous
ahadeeth narrating visits to grave-yards by the Holy Prophet (SAWA) and
our aimmah, recommending such visits to the Muslims, prescribing the
salaam to be recited before entering the grave-yard, offering prayers
there for the dead. Even our Fuqaha have always recommended such visits.
See Ayatullah Seestani's Taudhihul Masa'el p.119.

We regard aza-e-Imaam Hussain an 'ibadah and offer one another
condolences on the day od 'Ashura. It is only proper that we perform this
aza at a grave-yard where our dear ones are buried on that day and
dedicate the thawaab to the marhoomeen. Similarly we should share our
rejoicing on Eid days with our friends and relatives who have preceded us
to the destination towards which all us are inexorably headed.

There are ahadeeth recommending visits to the grave-yard on every
Thursday and every Sunday. We should during our visit assume a serious
disposition and avoid vain conversation and laughter. We should pray for
the deceased and contemplate over death, the only certainty awaiting us,
and resolve to make provision for our hereafter.

May Allah grant you all long and happy lives, and may He in His infinite
mercy grant us the tawfeek to visit grave-yards and send for those lying
there and unable to earn any thawaab for themselves, the thawaab of our
prayers.

Please do not hesitate to ask for the details of the ahadeeth referred to
above in general terms.

With salaams and du'aas from an humble servant of Ahlul Bayt and their
followers,

Bashir Rahim
