The initial answer by Mulla Asgher was based on the Masail of Ayatullah Khui. In the following reply, Mulla provides the differing rulings of Ayat. Khui and Ayat. Seestani in this matter, and outlines the responsibility of the Muqalids of Ayat. Khui in this regard. Wasalaam, Mustafa Rawji Moderator, 'Aalim Network ************************************************************************** QUESTION: I follow the taqleed of Ayatulla Seestani. I want to know what kind of art is allowed, i.e. drawings, paintings, sculptures, whatever, and what things would make it haram, like I have heard that drawing only half a body is haram or that putting the eyes in is haram, so many different things. ANSWER: Ayatullah Khui did not permit the drawing or painting of anything that is normally considered as living - having life. However, photography was allowed. However, Ayat. Seestani allows the portraits (painting) of humans or animals but does not permit the sculpture of such living things. Their rulings are as follows: ------- Al-Khui (RA) - Articles of Islamic Acts: 2077. Making the image of a living being, and even its painting, is unlawful; but there is no harm in purchasing and selling it, though it is better to abstain from it. -------- -------- Al-Seestani (RA) - Islamic Laws: 2077. Making a human sculpture or that of an animal, is haraam, but there is no harm in purchasing or selling it, though as a precaution, it should be avoided. However, painting human portraits or animals is permissible. -------- The responsibility for a follower of al-Khui (R) is the same as that for any Mas'ala. If he is in Taqlid of Ayatullah Seestani, he must follow the new rulings; if he has stayed on the old Taqlid, he may carry on as before. Asgherali M M Jaffer.
