 QUESTION:

 As Salam Alykum

Kindly provide answers to the following question. The reply to my questions
should be based on the rulings of Ayatollah Syed Ali Seestani.

Question: When a person is in the state of janbat, does the najast spread
from him, ie if he touches something in the state of janabat does that
object also become najis and has to be made pak again?

Also is eating in the state of janabat allowed?

			------------------

 ANSWER:

The state of Janaabat is not a state of physical impurity but,
rather, spiritual impurity. Therefore, it cannot be spread in the same
manner as a physical impurity. The person in this state (the Junub) cannot
make anything impure by touching it under any circumstances.

There is definitely an impurity in the state of Janaabat, however,
the impurity is ritual (spiritual) not physical. Ritual impurity is known
as Hadath and physical impurity is known as Najaasah. The only Hadath
which can be spread by touch is related to the dead human body. If you
touch the death human body after its has become entirely cold and before
its prescribed funeral baths you will be required to bathe (Ghusl
Massil-Mayyit). Other than this instance, Hadath cannot be spread by
touch. The necessity of the bath for Janaabah is to remove the ritual
impurity.

Regarding eating while in the state of Janaabat, it is Makrooh
based on Ahadith and the rulings of all Ulamaa`. However, if the person
perfoms Wudhoo` before eating, it is not Makrooh (see the Masail of Ayat.
Seestani below (from "Islamic Laws") for more detail and for other acts that
are Makrooh during this state).

MASAIL OF AYAT. SEESTANI: (For the complete text, please refer to the
                             Risala)

Things which are Makrooh for Junub

   362. * The following nine things are Makrooh for junub:
     * To eat
     * To drink
But if the junub washes his or her face, hands and mouth, then
eating or drinking in that state will not be Makrooh. And if he or
she washes the hands only, then unworthiness of the acts is
        reduced.
     * To recite more than seven verses of the holy Qur'an other than
those in which obligatory Sajdah occur.
     * To touch the cover, the margin or border of the holy Qur'an or the
space between its lines, with any part of one's body.
     * To keep the holy Qur'an with oneself.
     * To sleep. But it would not be Makrooh to sleep if the person
concerned performs wudhu or performs tayammum instead of Ghusl on
       account of non-availability of water.
     * To dye one's hair with henna etc
     * To apply oil on one's body.

Was-Salaam,

Ali Rasheed
