Chinmi

Meet Chinmi, the kung fu boy. Kung Fu Boy is a manga by Takeshi Maekawa. As you probably guessed, it is one of my favourite mangas. The character design in this manga is generally simple. However, it gradually gets more and more "realistic," in the sense that the characters are becoming less deformed and more detailed.

Later, Mr Maekawa ended the original Kung Fu Boy and started a new series, Shin Tekken Chinmi. The main characters are still the same, only the style of the story changed slightly.
The good thing is... Chinmi's movements are drawn more vividly. You can almost feel how powerful his movements are. The backgrounds are done in much more details, too.

It is this new series, Shin Tekken Chinmi, which returned me interest in drawing Chinmi again. I used to like drawing him, but later found that he is too simple. But I realized drawing a simple character in different, difficult poses could be interesting too. So, I started with this drawing.

At the same time, I trained myself using a drawing pen. As you can see, I made a mistake in the inking. The right part of Chinmi's shirt is too black. It seems awkward with the trousers so light.
To compensate, I shaded the clothes with pencil for a darker tone. Ah, well. Here it is! Enjoy!

The sketching took 3 days. The inking and shading took only a couple of hours.

Nothing really special with this drawing except that it was my first try at shading with a drawing pen (instead of a pencil).
Oh, and I started "honestly" by drawing a stick figure, complete with spinal line (I used to draw the pose directly).
Dimension: 15.8 x 21.2 cm Paper: thin drawing book page
Pen: Pilot drawing pen no. 03
Pencils: 2B (genuine and mechanical)
Work duration: about 2 months -_-;;
Date finished: 28 September 2001

Edit 1 November 2002:
As I felt it is rather unfair to show such a small thumbnail, I added a bigger version of the picture. Just click on the middle thumbnail to view.
As a side note, I once found one of my drawings in a completely unknown website. My first case of stolen picture. I didn't want this happen again, so I gave tiny thumbnails. Hopefully noone wants to steal my pictures this time.
