It was a fine evening that my Winamp was almost done playing a "TV size" Get Over, the first opening song of Hikaru no Go, when my ears caught the sounds of a song almost like Memory from Cats.
Outside my good old bedroom, for I was at home back in Malang when this happened, my parents were watching TV. Super 6 Plus 1 was the program broadcasted, and they seem to enjoy it very much as they will not miss it on the weekends. To attempt explaining what the program is about I shall not, for it is not necessary for my small story.
My interpretation, as it turned out, was not mistaken. The song I heard was indeed Memory, and it was sung well. The singer, as my mother later pointed out, was a university student. Excellent was her training that I could not say that she was a Chinese student, even though Chinese students usually speak what I recognize as "Chinese English."
It was my mother who talked in the middle of the song and this upset me. The singer, as I said, was excellent for a student and there were a number of occasions in which whistling and cheering could be heard from the audience present in the TV studio, a sign which supported my opinion. Yet I was upset, and when I was asked about the singing, I spontaneously answered rather untruthfully that it was not so nice compared to "the original singing."
I have never heard Memory sung in the musical!
I have only heard it in a version adapted to people not familiar with musicals. And I personally did think that the singing was nice. The reason I answered the way I did might simply be being spiteful. And how I regret that moment's mistake!
Evil words, evil words
Words I know I should not have said
Yet they were words I said
For not yet have I control over my words
Evil words, evil words
Words so easily said
Yet hard were they to be unsaid
For a moment's madness was behind my words
I was still lucky that this incident brought minimal negative effect; but we should always be careful with our words, small as they seem.
