We will be focusing on "cycles in nature" this grading period. The children will be studying about plants, personal safety and wellness, and the food guide pyramid.
Some activities which you can do at home with your child to encourage the language skill building process are listed. Please do not feel you must do these every night or for longer than 20 minutes per night. They are simple, but effective ideas for parent/child/family/study time.
- Make an emergency situation plan for your home (i.e., medical emergencies, calling 911, tornado drills, and fire drills).
- As you do your grocery shopping with your child, find at least one food in each section on the food guide pyramid. Determine the cost of the item and the cost when purchasing more than one.
- Plot and plant a flower, herb or vegetable garden.
- Visit the library and read books on plants, nutrition, ecology or safety.
- Take a walk through a greenhouse and/or an open air market. Notice different varieties of plants, fruits, or vegetables.
- Try a new fruit or vegetable at the family meal.
- Discuss changes in plant growth when driving or spending time in your yard.
- Let your child help plan a menu using the food guide pyramid. Let them create a "balanced" meal.
- Help your child develop a family wellness plan, including exercise and diet.
- Examine various seeds, roots, leaves and stems. Discuss which part of the plant we eat.
- Sign up for a class – help your mind and body grow! How about swimming, first-aid, boating, aerobics, gardening or cooking?
- Plant spring flowers with your child. Watch the stages of growth.
- Make a terrarium or pot a plant for a friend or neighbor.
- Map a safe walking/bicycle route and measure the mileage. Use it frequently as a family.
- Celebrate Earth Day (April 22) by planting a tree, cleaning your neighborhood, park, or beautifying your yard.
- Visit the Cincinnati Zoo – focus on the relationship between the flora and fauna (plants and animals) displayed in the park area.
- Try out the internet to learn more about plants, safety and nutrition.
- All School Field Trip to Cincinnati Museum Center to learn about "Amazing Caves" – Wednesday, May 16, 2001!
