READING TO GROW ~ GROWING TO READ
at Mililani High School
DESCRIPTION
Reading to Grow ~ Growing to Read is a literacy project for teenage parents who attend Mililani High School. The purpose of this program is to teach these young parents to value literacy and, subsequently, how to foster this love of reading in their own children.
Through bi-weekly lessons, participants of the Reading to Grow ~ Growing to Read program are provided with 1) information on emergent literacy, 2) skills to enable them to nurture literacy in their homes, and 3) greater access to resources that encourage literacy.
HISTORY
Reading to Grow ~ Growing to Read was conceived in 1997 at Mililani High School by two faculty members, Sylvia Wee (librarian) and Judy Manabat ( GRADS teacher). All funding for this project has been provided by a grant they received from the Pizza Hut Literacy Program.
Since its inception, the Reading to Grow ~ Growing to Read program has provided services to more than 80 individuals.
