Unended and Rhion's Lament
------------------------------
"Unended"
(by Sandra Pancoast)
Down and down again
spiral stairs descend,
winding in the dark,
eternity until the end.
Following with wonder,
a single candle's flame,
a star of light piercing dark
till shadows deepen and reclaim.
Down a hidden corridor,
as if into unknown,
where webs of spiders lace
grace the shadowed stone."

Rhion's Lament
(by Sandra Pancoast)
The wyvern of the cavern deep
sprawled across my carven shield
with flame and scale
and feathered wing,
carved upon an azure field,
breathed its flame and vent its fire,
and slashed with brazen razor claw,
and gnashed with fang,
and flashed with scale,
till fled the foe in frightened awe.
Victor of the gloried fight,
warrior of the highest fame,
sang the bards
and sighed the maids
at mention of my legend name.
Yet I was but a youngish child,
when first I had that wondrous dream,
and now I sit
upon the hearth
and cry at blood that dulled the gleam.
Our land in harried anguish torn,
our lives destroyed by brutal war,
the fields burn,
the children starve,
how much remains worth fighting for?
Now I wish the wooden wyvern
would fly me through the billowed sky
to joy and peace,
and younger days,
when I had reason not to cry.
(The wyvern of the cavern deep
sprawled across my carven shield
with flame and scale
and feathered wing,
carved upon an azure field).
