Not For Sleep

Is there time for sleep
when it's only you and me
have I satisfied your appetite
cravings for apple tea
I laugh when you swallow
and your eyes close tight
knowing you won't sleep
beside me in the night
and you bite your tongue
turning words into jasper mines
fickle fancy trembling
sleepy dust down our spines

but time is gone, left none
getting up to go again
raspberries by the fenceline
stopping to put them in

to this tin
cup we have in dreams
of times gone to stay
and those return with silken creams

pouring over pillows beneath our heads
and purple splotches on our feet
don't tend to bother us
there is no time for sleep.
