All That I Have
Beautiful day, I watched it come in
after a night of quiet still
and the trees came alive with the rustling
the players of the mosses, singers of the quill
squirrels have names there
to eat from the hand and know
that their breakfast comes soon
when I walk out, kissing into the air.
They like Cheez-Its and Wheat Thins
and birds fly down to get theirs too
and when I throw the box away, they wait
"That's all I have, go on now, shoo".
But they wait, Charlie gets up
on hind legs with front legs crouched
up by his nose, he covers his eyes
then retreats to a slouch.
The rabbits come out a little too late
for being up in the safety of night
the falcon who takes early flight
so my friends missed out on cracker delight
but there was Charlie...fat but still hungry?
peeped out from behind his little mask
as I walked into the building to the vending
he came up and sat to stare through the glass
spent three dollars on animal crackers and chips
little shortbread cookies and corn nuggets
I guess it wasn't all I had.
