Penny For Your Thoughts
I got to know the stone
that was given to you
that became you
I come alone
to tell you how I am
how my life has been
and how I'm getting on
without you since then
since you left that dawn-
I've a pocket full of pennies.
They tore the wishing well down
the other day
said it didn't do good anyway.
I'll give a penny for your thoughts
two flowers for the time you take with this
two frosted lips for the stone
lightly lean down to kiss
the engraving of you, "Free As A Bird"
some may think me crazy
for answering a voice they've not heard
I need to talk at times,
listen a penny's worth, or two, or three
even after twenty years
a penny for your thoughts
a thousand back to me
consoling all of my fears
though we've not walked this way
in hand, awhile
a penny for your thoughts
and my life for your smile.
