I don't understand what it is
this whatever you want from me
kids like boxes, kittens like shoestrings
and I like the solitary
but what do you want?

You have two-hour conversations with her
while I go to pick out my fish
you talk about me and you and we
you tell her of your wish
I got minnows and sunken treasure.

For whatever my confusion, I'm calm
following my fish in their watery scene
I don't need very much but you
will never be serene
I won't ever understand what you mean

or what it is you want.
