The Dagger
You had given me a Scottish dagger
to keep by my side in the car
to keep me safe from the ex who stalked
and followed me around, however far.
It symbolized where you came from
and you said it held a special place
of a sentimental value to you
authentic decorated handle and leather case.
It also symbolized how much I meant to you
a dagger like Romeo had for Juliet to use
as if I should submerge it to my heart
if ever to be your life you'd lose.
But in the final breath of our love
I offered it back to you, no hand
so I threw it to the ground
and said as if you'd understand
"I removed this from my heart
cleaned the blood off blade and cover
it's shiny and sharp and ready for you
to bestow on your next stupid lover."
So, in a symbolic way, my Romeo
we played the role quite well
but wasn't I to be the one, not you
to plunge the dagger through
my heart, in your dreary cell?
And wasn't it that we were both to die
but I fell
and you still fly.
