Friends Of Loudoun Kirk

A site dedicated to the preservation of Loudoun Kirk, Galston, Ayrshire.

Hi my name is David Livingstone I live in Darvel, Ayrshire in the West of Scotland. This is my first attempt at a web page, the theme of which will be Loudoun Kirk. As this site develops it will be taking a closer look at the history of the Kirk (Church) and the local area and it's people from the building of the Kirk through to the present day. I will also be focusing on the work and dedication of "The Friends Of Loudoun Kirk" a local group of volunteers who are dedicated to the preservation of the Kirk. As you can imagine this will be a lengthy project so please feel free to visit this page many times and see how it's going.

Thanks for now,
David Livingstone

Loudoun Kirk

Photographed June 1998

Loudoun Kirk was built in 1451 and was the parish church of Loudoun until early in the 17th century.Unfortunately the Kirk is now a ruin, except for the choir, used as the burial vault of the Loudoun Family The Kirk is a pre-reformation structure, it most likely replaced the original church founded by the monks of Kilwinning Abbey in the 13th century. Set into the choir wall is a memorial stone to Lady Flora Hastings who was broken in spirit by Queen Victoria. She is also commemorated by Lady Flora’s School in Newmilns. Also in the Kirkyard are the graves of The Covenanter Thomas Fleming of Loudonhill, and of Janet Little, minor poet, and contemporary of Robert Burns

Thanks to Alloway Publishing and James Mair.
